San Francisco, California: If you've ever gotten off work and wished you could grab a bowl of gumbo on your way home, this one's for you.
Gumbo Social currently closes at 6 PM. That means a lot of people — the ones working full days, the ones commuting home, the ones who need dinner and not lunch — don't make it through our doors. We hear about it regularly. We've been thinking about how to fix it for a long time.
Here's what we're ready to do.
What We're Building
The plan is to launch a pilot takeout window, open from 6 PM to 10 PM, so Bayview has a real evening dining option on Third Street. Walk up, order, take it home. Or order online through Toast and have it delivered. Gumbo and po'boys for dinner, the way it should have always been.
This isn't a full interior service expansion. It's a walk-up window, designed thoughtfully to serve the neighborhood while keeping our staff safe and respecting our residential neighbors. We're starting with a pilot because we want to do this right. Test it, learn from it, and build something that lasts if the community adopts it.
Why This Matters for Bayview
Bayview is in the middle of a real moment. New businesses are opening. People are investing in this neighborhood in ways they weren't a few years ago. But evening dining options on Third Street remain limited, and that gap affects everyone: residents, workers, and the businesses that depend on foot traffic after dark.
We want to be part of changing that. And we believe that if Gumbo Social extends its hours and makes it work, other businesses will follow. A stronger evening scene on Third Street is good for every business here, not just ours.
How You Can Help
To launch this pilot safely and responsibly, we need to cover:
A service door installation for the walk-up window.
Security cameras to ensure staff and customer safety.
Staffing costs to operate evening hours.
Operational infrastructure to support online ordering and delivery through Toast and third-party partners.
Every dollar raised goes directly toward getting this window open. Nothing else.
